A super smooth taste that's out of your reach.
It is a little surprising to be doing a Diplomatico review that isn’t for Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva. Im sure at some point I will but as its…
A super smooth and easy to sip rum
Easily the most popular Diplomatico rum and arguably South American rum…
Nearly every blogger and publication has vouched for this rum. So lets review something that… doesn’t exist (in the UK anyway, F**k it)!
So this Diplomatico Blanco Reserve Rum bottle has travelled with me for years. It was one of the first rums I purchased and I simply never got round to finishing it. Mainly due to the sheer height of the bottle normally demoting it off the booze shelves as it doesn’t fit. A learning for all those tall rum bottles out there.
Diplomatico has 3 pot stills and 4 column stills, both a master distiller and a master blender (Tito Cordero) and the parent distillery produce a number of brands rum. It's made in the Andes Mountains of Venezuela, giving a Spanish style to them. They make rum from sugar cane honey at a whopping 60% sugar content, as well as molasses.
It’s a family owned brand since 2002 but established in 1959. Current producer is Destilerias Unidas whom proudly also make Cacique Rum and supply the rum which is blended to make Pampero.
The Blanco Reserve is a blend of rums between 2 and a whopping 6 years old, choosing from 21 warehouses and 260k casks. The rums are a split between molasses based column still and sugar cane pot still.
This makes you instantly question the crystal clear liquid in the bottle, which is owed to a charcoal filtering to remove any colour. The result is the perception of fresh distilled rum but it's actually aged.
This long slender bottle certainly looks the part and as the Sip Awards 2014 Gold winner has some good credentials. So let's have a dram and try to figure out what is so good about it and what led it to be discontinued in the UK at least. If you want more great detail into the distillery set up, Difford's Guide did a great article here.
As you pull off the cork you are greeted with a surprisingly deep, low sounding pop. I was expecting a squeaker.
Smell: Well here I'm a little surprised… I can’t smell anything, quite disappointed.
Appearance : I’m looking very closely at this glass to find any ageing colour hints. Nothing… crystal clear, a filtering masterclass.
Taste: This is a very smooth rum and leaves you salivating as well… very juicy. But the smoothness seems to go in hand with its lack of flavour. Like the smell I'm not getting a lot.
Rating: 2/5... It's a super smooth rum but I'm missing the flavour I would like to see from an unaged "white" rum.
It's a smooooooth rum so enjoy it in a glass on its own.
