A truly authentic Caribbean bar in the heart of Singapore
Lime House is a Caribbean restaurant with an accompanying cocktail bar called Bago. Both have there routes stemmed from Trinidad and Tobago and is the brain child of Chris Morris. The bar is one of many establishments along Keong Saik Road to the west side of Singapore, just below China town. However it is unique in its bounty of rum brands on offer.
It's important to note I was unable to venture into Bago bar itself so this review relates to the Lime House restaurant and side bar.
The bar has a boho modern feel. Clean, pastel colours with sprinkles of Tiki themes like the tiki glasses holding straws at the bar and large whicker like baskets as light shades. Staff are appropriately dressed in tiki shirts and we were lucking to be able to pick the brains of @Zach, who works the bar but also sells their custom rum.
The Lime House bar is long, with gold and light trims that accentuate the many rums on offer. The collection is out side of the normal fodder (Havana, Barcardi and Plantation) and had a lovely mix of East meets local Caribbean. For the east there was the ever impressive Samai from Cambodia and Chung from Thailand, for the Caribbean the likes of Saint James from Martinique, Wray&Nephew and Doorleys to name a few.
Excitingly they also have their own aged rum called Bago. A combination of blended rums from Trinidad & Tobago, bottled in Singapore. You can find more info on that in due course.
The cocktail menu was surprisingly limited given the choice of rums at their disposal. We opted for the Limehouse (Ti) Punch and a classic Daiquiri with Bago as the base.
The Limehouse punch was in a word... delicious. It immediately transported me back to my travels in Martinique. Arriving in a small snifter, this cocktail had a lovely balance. The initial sweetness from the honey is quickly layered with nutmeg and other spices with a little chilli/ginger kick. An easy 5/5
Sadly no Mai Tai's were on offer so the Daiquiri was the key cocktail to compare vs other bars. The presentation was first class with a lovely thin stemmed coupe glass and a dried lime wheel as a garnish. The drink itself though was a bit watery with the rum not coming through at all. The taste was ok but not a Daiquiri I would order again. 2/5 :(
With only the restaurant bar available we decide to move on with the internal promise to return and see The Bago Bar in all its glory for a full review.
That being said the Limehouse is no slouch as rum bars go, especially in Singapore. The Food looked great and if you are sticking to the menu or keen to try many different rums it is a great spot.
Rating: 3/5... Authentic Caribbean bar/restaurant, just let down by the Daiquiri
