Taste some molasses goodness and some rum cocktails to boot.
Tucked away at one of the side streets in Brixton, the Rum Kitchen feels like a hidden gem with its low canopies at the front hiding itself from full view. Upon entry you are soaked with Wray & Nephew brand bottles, but once the bar is in full view any concern that the rum selection will be limited very quickly evaporates like angel share.
Opposite the long bar there’s floor to ceiling locked crates filled with Wray n Nephew bottles illuminated by bright back lights. In the distance the bar opens up to the restaurant, but the bar is where I want to be tonight. Food or no food.
The rum kitchen has 3 spots around London, all in trendy areas which is no surprise as the place has an edge to it. The venture is one of many love childs by Alex Potter and Jonny Boud who wanted to bring to life music, jerk food and rum cocktails to the forefront, ultimately making anybody dance carnival style.
We tuck into some house specials to start off. The Ting Wray and the Jamrock Punch. The latter arrives blue from the coloured Curaçao I suspect which I’ve never been a fan of and the drink was a bit disappointing TBH. The Jamrock Punch is more promising, balance of sweet and a littler sour with a lovely pineapple froth head on it. While the mini beer mugs reaped havoc with my hand, the first round was overall good. So I maintain an open mind for the Mai Tai...
So first off I'm surprised to see an orange wheel alongside my sprig of mint. Nothing against it and keen to see what's within. Visually it’s a lot lighter and upon first sip I’m happily surprised. It’s refreshing, highly citrus and floral. You don’t get the expected dark, rich, molasses from a Trader Vic style Mai Tai. Nonetheless the rum blends mix well to deliver a Mai Tai full of light flavours.
Whilst I tucked into a few more cocktails as the evening wore on I have to say the true heroes of the night were the food and music. The wings marinated in molasses were delicious and the spontaneous dancing from the staff when their favourite song came on just added to the entertainment.
If you are looking for some great food and some cocktails to wash it down, either as a date or (in my view) for best results a group of friends. The Rum Kitchen will deliver the vibes for a great night out. You won’t go wrong ordering a Rude Boy or their signature Mai Tai.
Rating: 3/5 Limes… You could argue this low and I would agree but this is purely based on the cocktails I tried which varied in quality too much. When you add in the food this is easily a 4 limes place.
