Rumming up the No.1 cocktail in the world with this all rum Old Fashioned for global Old Fashioned Week, and a little Halloween.
Step aside Pornstar Martini, take a nap Espresso Martini and go back to the city Miss. Cosmopolitan because the Old Fashioned is officially the No.1 cocktail in the world, and has been for many years.
The Old Fashioned is traditionally made with Bourbon Whiskey and is all about the build of the cocktail vs a spread of ingredients to bring out the flavour. It's a cocktail that on paper sounds so simple yet it's construction and balance are crucial in order to create a truly delicious drink.
The Old Fashioned dates back pre-prohibition times, a blend of bourbon, bitters, sugar syrup and ice all combined and stirred until the perfect temperature and dilution is achieved. Invented by James. E. Pepper in Louisville (the home of bourbon) which didn't really explode until he unleashed it in the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel Bar New York.
Now you can get this drink in any bar in the world that is worth it's salt... If you are lucky, they can make a rum version to.
If not then fear not as I have just the bourbon inspired Rum Old Fashioned for you to make at home.
Serves: 1
Ingredients
35ml Diplomatico Exclusiva
20ml Santa Teresa Orange
10ml Sugar Syrup (2:1 sugar ratio)
Dash Angostura Bitters
Zest of Orange
Ice (good sized cubed ice)
Equipment Needed
Rocks Glass
Bar Spoon or Cocktail Stirrer
"Potato" Peeler
Method
Grab a cold rocks glass and pour in the two rums and bitters.
Use your bar spoon to pour in 10ml of sugar syrup.
Add 1 good sized ice cube and stir the cocktail for a good 10-30 seconds, using the reverse end of the spoon or cocktail stirrer. (NOTE: we are looking for ice dilution and a very cold liquid temperature so if it needs longer, give it so) Then fill the glass with more ice.
Take a long downward peel from an orange, hold it from each end and give it a gentle twist to release all the zest and oils over the drink.
Find a seat in a comfortable armchair, take a sip and enjoy the celebration of Old Fashioned Week.
