THE BURLOCK - Bar Review

Head out to Marylebone in search of the Burlock and its collection of 200 different rums.

The Burlock is a 1920s Cuban-themed bar based in an underground snug in Marylebone. It was nearly named "Plantation" but for obvious reasons it was reincarnated as The Burlock. For those not in the know, burlock is the twine-and-hemp packaging used to conceal booty by rum-runners. Nicely named.

I was able to get to the Burlock as soon as lockdown was lifted with my fellow rum reviewer Soren. We weren't disappointed as we were greeted by over 200 rums and home made syrups.

Nestled underground the bar needs to create its own light which it does down to a Tee-(light), creating a lovely ambience. Warm candles rest on every table with spot lights aimed onto walls filled with cool portraits. There are two snug areas, one near the bar and a larger raised area at the far corner, perfect for smaller groups wanting to sit and take in the action vs being in the centre. I love the corner wall which has half closed blinds with a light behind it, giving the impression you are in fact above ground.

The main wall facing the entrance door hits home its rum bar credentials. It is sectioned off per geographical rum area with a list of “who’s who” of rum brands so you can explore different brands once you select a style.

So it's important to have a consistent element to bar reviews. After much deliberation we settled on the Mai Tai cocktail.

The Burlock's Mai Tai was crafted by Chris, the German bartender who was extremely knowledgeable and looked after us all night.

The Mai Tai, was made well, Bacardi Cuatro at its base which I wasn't stoked about but the drink was balanced well and served in a fashionable goole tiki glass.

Other notable cocktails were the Coffee Colada, a delicious blend of dark mozart, rum and coffee served long in a colada glass.

Finally we had a pair of the house Burlock Rum Punch which after much debate and a little help from Chris, we decoded the recipe which I will share in my next blog.

The Burlock is a great place for an evening mid week date or a more boustrous latino night out. All bought together with delicious rum to match any fancy.

Rating: 4/5... Good Mai Tai, great bar scene and great bartenders
